The five "choices" of tiles

Tiles, as we know, are important and long-lasting finishes in our homes which are always chosen by the owners, who in most cases decide to purchase them according to their own aesthetic taste and based on their financial resources

The quality of the tile chosen is often de facto dependent on the reputation of the seller:

"Architect, the seller guaranteed me the quality. Have you seen what showroom they have?"

or

"I bought them from that famous retailer," indicating the name.

But what are the quality classes or "choices" of tiles and what differences do they have? There are mainly four different qualities of tile on the market:

  1. First Choice;

  2. First Commercial Choice;

  3. Second Choice;

  4. Third choice/Oven return.

First Choice is the best quality of the tiles on the market.

They comply with a specific regulation which rigorously defines the dimensional tolerances based on the measurements of the tile. They are free from defects in flatness and aesthetics of the finish. The overall quality also makes them very durable.

The "Commercial" First Choice is similar to the First Choice but undergoes much less rigorous factory checks. It respects the construction standards on dimensional tolerances of the First Choice, must be free of flatness defects and may have slight defects on the finish.

"Commercial First Choice" tiles are the most widely sold.

The "Second Choice" tiles, on the other hand, have clearly visible aesthetic defects ranging from an uneven finish to scratches or even chipping. They also have flatness defects in the center of the tile or at the edges.

The "Third Chioice" or "Oven Return" tiles are the poorest from a qualitative, structural and construction point of view and are consequently the cheapest on the market.

So which tiles to choose?

The "First Choice" is certainly the safest tile to purchase (even the most expensive) which, if laid by expert hands, guarantees a result of the highest aesthetic and functional level. They are to be preferred in environments where aesthetic quality is fundamental.

The "Commercial First Choice" tile is a valid alternative to the "First Choice".

But unfortunately it is increasingly an unknown.

Often they are sold as "First Choice" quality (and price), once delivered to the construction site they present the characteristics of the "Second Choice" and sometimes also of the "Third Choice".

The "Second Choice" tiles can be used in environments where high aesthetic quality is not required, such as for example storage rooms, technical rooms or even garages.

The "Third Choice / Oven Return" tiles are to be avoided in case of permanent installation.

In any case and before tackling the final purchase of the tiles, my advice is always to involve the Works Manager and the Tiler appointed by you, who will certainly be able to direct you in choosing the right product, thus eliminating the risk of unpleasant surprises once once the flooring has been laid.
